Italian football club, AS Roma, has announced the sacking of José Mourinho.
They confirmed in a statement that Mourinho his coaching staff will leave the club with immediate effect in a statement on January 16, 2024.
“We would like to thank José on behalf of all of us at AS Roma for his passion and efforts since his arrival at the club,” the owners of AS Roma, Dan and Ryan Friedkin said.
“We will always have great memories of his tenure at Roma, but we believe that an immediate change is in the best interests of the club.
“We wish José and his assistants all the best in their future endeavours,” the statement added.
José Mourinho led the team to win the Conference League in Tirana on May 25th, 2022, and to the Europa League final in Budapest last season.
Sadly for the Portuguese manager, he received a second successive red card in the Lazio loss and later compared himself to Harry Potter, suggesting his profile was “raising expectations” for what Roma could achieve.
This result came after they were defeated 3-1 by AC Milan on Sunday, which left Roma five points adrift of Fiorentina, the fourth-placed team in the Serie A league and led to his dismissal.
Meanwhile, Mourinho’s contract was to expire at the end of the current season.
He was unveiled as the club’s 60th coach in May 2021.
