Channel crossing incident: One person dead, two missing

One person has died following the Channel crossing incident.

According to reports, two others are missing after a boat carrying migrants got into difficulty in the Channel.

French maritime authorities disclosed that the boat had 50 migrants on board when it got into difficulty off the French coast on Wednesday, February 28, 2024.

Rescuers were told by those on board that three people had gone overboard.

The French maritime prefecture indicated that one person was recovered from the water but was unable to be resuscitated while two others could not be found.

To help the victims, two French naval vessels and a helicopter were deployed.

Following this, the other passengers on board were taken to safety.

A spokesperson for the UK government has confirmed that they had been notified about the incident “involving a small boat in French waters”.

“French authorities are leading the response and investigation. We will not be commenting further at this stage,” they said.

Being one of the several rescues that took place on Wednesday, about 180 people had been rescued throughout the day.
