Athletic Club has been crowned champions of the Copa del Rey after defeating Mallorca on Saturday, April 6, 2024.
They beat Mallorca 4-2 on penalties.
Dani Rodriguez broke the deadlock of the match in the 21st minute to put Mallorca ahead.
In the 50th minute, Ohian Sancet equalized for the Bilbao-based club.
Nothing separated the teams after 120 minutes of play—as it ended 1-1.
During the penalty kicks, Athletic’s goalkeeper Julen Agirrezabala saved a spot kick from Mallorca’s Manu Morlanes. Also, Nemanja Radonjic failed to convert his kick.
However, the penalty takers of Athletic Club scored four kicks flawlessly.
The victory ended Athletic Club’s 40-year silverware drought. It’s their 24th Copa del Rey title.
Nico Williams won the man of the match. Together with his brother, Iñaki Williams, they have been instrumental and contributed immensely towards this victory.
